KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 14 — Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin and PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah were among Malaysian newcomers listed in "The 500 Most Influential Muslims in the World", while PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat dropped out of the Top 50.

The Kelantan mentri besar since 1990, Nik Aziz was listed as the 42nd most influential in 2009. No Malaysian made it to the top 50 list this year.

The other newcomers from Malaysia are Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Dr Mashitah Ibrahim, the country's first astronaut Datuk Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, and Professor Dr Muhammad Afifi al-Akiti.

Muhammad Afifi was one of the first Malaysians to be appointed to the Oxford University's Theology Faculty after the 2005 London bombings.

The book also included the views of Mashitah, who is also a motivational expert on contemporary Islamic issues.

She entered the political scene six years ago by contesting the 2004 general election on Umno's ticket.

Other Malaysian leaders who stayed on the list are Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim; Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak; SIS founder Zainah Anwar; vice president of the Penang consumer association Mohideen Abdul Kader; Raihan group members, Che Amran Idris, Abu Bakar Md Yatim, Amran Ibrahim and Zulfadli Mustaza; and world-renowned expert and writer in Islamic studies and modern law comparison, Professor Dr Mohammad Hashim Kamali.

Notable absentees from this year's list were former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, activist and leader of Sisters In Islam (SIS) Sharifah Zuriah Aljefferi, and also academic expert Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr Osman Bakar.

"The 500 Most Influential Muslims in the World" was first published last year by The Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre.

Muslim personalities worldwide who make the list are considered influential and to have contributed to mankind.

The ranking covers 15 different categories including scholars, politicians, intellectuals, women, youth, scientists, personnel in the medical, technology and the media fields.

The top 10 in the list this time includes Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah Abdul Aziz Al Saud; Iranian leader Syed Ali Khamenei; Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyib Erdogan; chief Imam of Al-Azhar and University Al-Azhar leader Dr Sheikh Ahmad Muhammad Al Tayeb; Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono; chief of the international Muslim scholars Yusuf Al-Qaeadawi; social activist Amr Khaled; Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah; leader of Ikhwanul Muslimim Mesir Syeikh Mohammad Mahdi Akef; and Hamas leader Khaleed Mishal.

Low turnouts continue to mar PKR polls

November 14, 2010

SHAH ALAM, Nov 14 — Fewer than 10 per cent of the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) members from the Kapar, Kota Raja and Klang branches voted in the party election for the central leadership council (MPP) held today.

When polling was closed about 4.30pm, only about 300 of the 5,000 PKR members from Kapar had cast their votes. In Kota Raja, the numbers were 658 from the total 7,992 while 400 out of 6,000 members voted in the Klang division.

However, no untoward incident was reported in all three divisions.

PKR vice-presidential candidate, Kapar Member of Parliament S.Manikavasagam, when contacted, said he was disappointed with the members' turnout.

"I was informed that many were not able to attend because of the festive season and wedding ceremonies. The location is not suitable because many members do not know where the Sungai Pinang hall, where the election was held, is.

"However, I'm glad that everything went well," he added.

Meanwhile, the election for the central leadership council for the Kuala Langat division has been postponed to November 20. — Bernama

Malaysian court refuses mum's bid to convert sons' religion

Malaysian court refuses mum's bid to convert sons' religion

by The Malaysian Insider

05:55 AM Nov 13, 2010

PUTRAJAYA - Malaysia's top court on Friday unanimously dismissed a Hindu mother's bid to raise her two young children in the religion they grew up with.

Ms S Shamala's two children were converted to Islam eight years ago by her estranged Hindu-turned-Muslim husband, without her knowledge or consent.

Friday's 5-0 ruling in the Federal Court is a blow to the battle to end one-sided religious conversions. These have caused a rift in the nation, which is multicultural and secular but recognises Islam as the official creed. The panel, led by Chief Justice Zaki Azmi, also ruled that Ms Shamala must return to Malaysia if she wants the court's protection.

The 38-year-old fled the country in 2004 with her two sons Saktiwaran and Theivaswaran - now aged 11 and nine years old respectively. Their current location is unknown.

Both parents are in a bitter fight to gain custody over the two boys and be allowed to raise them in their respective religions.

Capello is set to select his squad on Saturday evening and with Jermain Defoe, Darren Bent and Bobby Zamora injured, Rooney has been tipped to return to international action.

However, Ferguson has moved to warn Capello not to choose the 25-year-old, insisting that Rooney is unfit to play for England.

Ferguson told the Daily Star: "He can only be available if he's fit - and he's not fit."

Rooney has recovered from an ankle injury and is back from the United States and looking to refocus on his football after public disgrace through allegations about his private life.

Selangor Sultan to skip costly function – Star Online

Saturday November 13, 2010

SHAH ALAM: The Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has turned down an invitation to attend a function to commemorate Selangor Foundation's 40th anniversary as he is displeased over the high cost of the celebration.

State Secretary Datuk Ramli Mahmud said the Sultan had initially agreed to attend the function with the hope that his presence would inject new spirit for the staff and in appreciation of their efforts to help improve the performance of students from less fortunate families in the rural areas in Selangor.

However, he said the Sultan was unhappy over the high cost of RM300,000 involved and felt the money could have been put to better use.

"The Sultan said the money could have been used to bear the cost of studies of rural students and on their welfare instead," Ramli told a press conference after the state assembly meeting yesterday.

He said Sultan Sharafuddin felt the money to be spent on the celebration was too much and would not reap any benefits.

"He was initially excited about the anniversary celebration as he wanted to spend time with students who were getting financial assistance from the foundation.

"The Sultan also felt his presence at the celebration would motivate the students. However, he was taken aback when he was told of the high cost," Ramli said.

The anniversary, which was initially planned as a dinner, was changed to a luncheon but the cost was still high, he said.

It is learnt that Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, who is the foundation president, was unaware of the exorbitant cost of the celebration.

Khalid had proposed to cancel the celebration when he was told of the cost, Ramli added.

The event is scheduled to be held on Monday at Asrama Tun Dr Ismail in Kampung Pandan, Kuala Lumpur

Hadi warns Umno to be gracious if they lose Putrajaya

From ...Malaysian Insider

By Syed Mu'az Syed Putra

November 13, 2010

SHAH ALAM, Nov 13 — Umno must ensure it will withdraw from the government in a gentlemanly manner if it loses in the next general elections, Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said today.

The PAS president said Umno should learn to accept losses in an open-minded manner, and not resort to underhanded tactics to win, like what happened in Perak last year.

Pakatan Rakyat (PR) won Perak in the 2008 general elections, but Barisan Nasional (BN) wrested the state from the opposition after several PR assemblymen left the party to become BN-friendly independents.

"I urge Umno to step away in a gentlemanly fashion if they lose. Just admit defeat, do not try to wiggle your way into a victory like in Perak. If you have lost, it means you have lost, it's the same with Orang Asli votes..

"We know Umno has problems but they are still trying to cover it up, eventually everyone will see their problems," Abdul Hadi told reporters after launching a "PAS is ready to take over Umno" program here.

Abdul Hadi (picture), who is Marang MP called on PAS members to fortify the party's machinery in the event of possible snap polls.

"We have to strategise, we have to win on our own merits, not because of our opponents. Fighting with Umno is like fighting with madmen, there are no laws. So if we want to fight them we have to have our own strategy, and it has to be done on a grassroots level," said the PAS president.

He also stressed that PAS should also try and obtain support among Umno members as well as non-Malays, stressing that the Islamist party could not hope for an electoral win without the backing and support of all parties.

The one day program today was attended by 1,200 PAS members including Selangor state PAS leaders.

Abdul Hadi's call for Umno to step down gracefully comes as Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak vowed that Umno will maintain its dominance and rule over Putrajaya "no matter what the cost."

In his stirring yet controversial policy speech at the recent Umno general assembly, Najib called on Umno delegates to defend Umno and BN's control over federal power, claiming that they were ever-ready to take on a weakened Pakatan Rakyat.

Najib's policy speech, which drew heavily on Umno's past successes as a blueprint for future triumph, appears to have stirred the country's oldest Malay party, as BN recently scored two big victories in winning the Galas seat as well as the Batu Sapi parliamentary seat.

What are we going to do to safeguard our generation?

Total of 472 babies discarded since 2005

PETALING JAYA: The latest data from the police reveals that 65 babies have been dumped this year alone, 26 of them boys, 25 girls and the other 14 being foetuses.

This brings the total to 472 cases since 2005, in more than half of which, or 258, the babies were found dead.

Last year, a total of 79 cases were reported.

Among the abandoned babies this month was a girl left outside the house of a childless couple in Bukit Minyak, Bukit Mertajam on Sunday.

The couple, who considered the baby a gift from God, kept the girl for 36 hours before reporting it to the police following advice from neighbours on Tuesday.

On the same day, a man who was fishing in a river in Kota Damansara decided to take a closer look at an abandoned bag and was shocked to find that it contained the body of a newborn baby girl.

Last Thursday, an eight-year-old boy found a dead baby girl in a sewage tank behind a college dormitory in Bandar Bukit Bunga, Tanah Merah, Kelantan.

The authorities took 45 minutes to remove the remains before sending it to the hospital for a post-mortem.

On Aug 11, a factory security guard found a newborn baby girl abandoned in a dumpster outside a factory in the Ayer Keroh Industrial Estate in Malacca. He was alerted by the sounds of a baby crying from outside the factory.

On the same day, a villager from Kampung Sungai Dua found a baby girl wrapped in batik cloth dumped in front of a house.

The infant's face was swollen, and she was taken to the intensive care unit of Seremban's Tuanku Ja'afar Hospital.

On Aug 9, a scavenger found a dead baby boy in a garbage bin in Lebuh Macallum, Penang, the second case of baby dumping in the state in 10 days.

On Aug 1, a newborn baby girl with her umbilical cord still intact was found abandoned in a shophouse in Nibong Tebal. She survived and is now reported to be healthy.

This should be investigated … quite logical really.

PAS Youth: National celebrations causing baby dumping

PETALING JAYA: PAS is blaming Valentine's Day and New Year celebrations as among the main causes of baby dumping in the country.

PAS Youth chief Nasrudin Hassan said the occasions were celebrated in an extreme manner and en couraged liberal socialising and free sex, which resulted in the act of dumping babies.

"Baby dumping is rampant especially during the months of July to September – the months are dubbed the 'baby dumping season'," he said yesterday.

Nasrudin also said the party would hold a roundtable discussion with non-governmental organisations and political parties on Aug 22 to discuss ways in which all parties could contribute to solving the problem.

He said there had been 15 cases of baby dumping between July and yesterday.

"It is an indication that the 'mating season' occurred during the New Year celebrations. We expect more cases between now and September," he said, adding that the high number of cases of couples caught for khalwat(close proximity) was recorded during carnivals including the Merdeka Day celebrations.

He said the celebrations, which originated from the West, did not "sit well with our country's traditions."

"These celebrations put youths in situations involving alcohol and indecent behaviour," said Nasrudin, adding that the Government should control such celebrations and entertainment outlets.

"These babies are born out of wedlock from irresponsible actions through forbidden relationships. If the babies were born through marriage, they would not be thrown away," he said.

Nasrudin was responding to a news portal report yesterday quoting PAS Youth deputy chief Azman Shapawi Rani that such celebrations in the country were the main causes of baby dumping.

He urged the Government to look into preventive measures and not only dwell on punishment against the youths.

"They must review the education system to teach youths how to apply their knowledge of subjects like morality in everyday life, rather than merely feeding them information all day in schools," he said.

Woman with tummy cramps has miscarriage and dumps foetus in hospital

MALACCA: A woman in her 20s went to the Malacca Hospital complaining of a stomach ache but had a miscarriage in the toilet and dumped her five-month-old foetus in a dustbin.

The incident took place around 4pm Tuesday when the woman, a student in a local instituition of higher learning, was brought to the hospital by her family after complaining of stomach cramps.

However, when at the emergency ward, the woman said she needed to use the ladies' room and ended up having a miscarriage while in the toilet.

She is believed to have dumped the foetus in a dustbin outside the ward. However, she later confessed to the act when questioned by doctors examining her who suspected something amiss.

A police report was lodged by the hospital authorities around 7pm, and efforts were underway to locate the foetus at the hospital's main dump site.

State CID chief ACP Mohd Adnan Abdullah said a couple, in their 20s, were arrested the same day for investigations.

The couple is being investigated under Section 318 of the Penal Code for concealing the birth and disposing of a foetus.

The suspects, Mohd Adnan said, have been remanded until Aug 21.

It’s our collective responsibility … let’s solve this social problem!

Porn a major reason behind baby dumping, say cops

KUALA LUMPUR: Widespread access to pornography and weakened family ties have led to an increase in baby dumping in the past five years, according to Federal CID director Comm Datuk Seri Bakri Zinin.

"Youth today can easily have access to such material online, even through their mobile phones.

"Parents also need to guide and educate their children on sexuality," he said yesterday at Bukit Aman.

Comm Bakri also urged the public to work closely with the police in identifying such cases.

He said sometimes neighbours or people in the community knew about such pregnancies but were not forthcoming.

He said police records showed 65 babies were dumped or abandoned up to August – bringing the total number of babies dumped or abandoned since 2005 to 472.

Of the total dumped or abandoned, more than half or 258 were found dead.

"We do not take this lightly and will investigate such cases thoroughly.

"For the record we have so far arrested 21 people and have charged six of them resulting in two of them being convicted.

"We investigate baby dumping cases under section 302 of the Penal Code for murder or Section 307 for attempted murder.

"But, the final decision rests with the Attorney-General Chambers," he added.

200 cheated of RM10mil by Africans claiming to be college boys

By ANDREW SAGAYAM
saggy@thestar.com.my

KUALA LUMPUR: At least 200 people in the city have been conned of nearly RM10mil since early last year by Africans who entered the country on student visas, but never once stepped into a classroom.

Although these so-called "students" are enrolled in top colleges under fake scholarships, they are more often spotted cruising in flashy cars and frequenting nightspots.

These Africans are believed to be conmen who plied their shady trade overseas before dumping their ill-gotten gains in local banks and "settling down" here.

However, once here, they continue their activities by duping Malaysians of their life savings, using bank accounts of locals to cheat their victims, who are mostly single successful women, either divorced or widowed.

Among the most common scams are tricking Malaysians into paying for non-existent gifts, buying coloured water as "vaccines" to keep cattle healthy and disease-free, and "black money" cases.

City Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Asst Comm Izany Abdul Ghany, who revealed this, said it was alarming that despite numerous warnings, Malay sians continued to fall into the conmen's trap.

He said scams operated by Africans topped the list of commercial crime cases in the city, reeling in the largest amount of ill-gotten money.

the list of commercial crime cases in the city, reeling in the largest amount of ill-gotten money.

"The numbers are rising. Between January last year and June, locals in the city alone were cheated of nearly RM10mil, and the figure could be higher because some victims are still unaware that they are being conned.

"The scams are committed throughout the country but the exchange of money usually takes place in the city," ACP Izany said, adding that over 100 women and 80 men were conned since early last year.

ACP Izany said checks showed that these Africans had committed similar scams in other countries before coming to Malaysia.

"After these syndicates are busted, they enter Malaysia by using fake scholarships apparently given by their country of origin," he said.

He added that many of the women conned would freely give up their money after being swept off their feet by Africans who lured them with sweet talk and promises.

"The conmen target single women in their 30s and 40s. The victims include doctors and university lecturers," he said, urging higher learning institutions and relevant agencies to scrutinise carefully the applications of foreign students.

Federal Commercial Crime Investigation Department's Cyber and Multimedia Investigation Division assistant director ACP Mohd Kamarudin Md Din said in some cases, the victims had met the conmen through social networking websites. They would usually post pictures of other people, sometimes of famous models, just to get closer to the victims.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Khaled Nordin said there was a "small number" of foreign students involved in crime here, most of whom had entered the country illegally.

He urged the police to provide the ministry with relevant information so that appropriate action could be taken.

Sodomy II prosecutor honoured with Federal award

By Neville Spykerman and Debra Chong (THE Malaysian Insider)

June 05, 2010

KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 — Sodomy II lead prosecutor Datuk Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden was among those who received Federal awards in conjunction with the King's birthday today.

He was among the 1,626 honoured by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin at the Istana Negara today. The Solicitor-General II received the Panglima Jasa Negara award, which carries the title "Datuk".

Mohd Yusof is involved in the second sodomy trial of Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who has been accused of committing the act against former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.

Anwar's lawyers had unsuccessfully sought to get the career prosecutor and his entire team disqualified from the trial last year.

The PKR de facto leader claimed all six prosecutors had worked hand-in-glove with Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail — who was the lead prosecutor in the first sodomy trial against him — to hide evidence that was in the former deputy premier's favour and falsified facts, such as how he was beaten up while in police custody and which led to the infamous "black eye" incident in 1998.

Mohamed Yusof was then head of the prosecution unit in the AG's Chambers.

The late Tan Sri Azizan Zainul Abidin, who was president of Petronas and Putrajaya Corporation, was posthumously awarded the Seri Setia Mahkota Malaysia award. The country's highest award carries the title "Tun".

The career civil servant died on July 14, 2008 at age 68.

SELAMAT HARI GURU

Dari Filem - To Sir With Love

Diucapkan Selamat Hari Guru

BERBURU ke padang datar
Dapat rusa belang kaki
Berguru kepala ajar
Ibarat bunga kembang tak jadi
(dedikasi kepada Hari Guru dan guruku tercinta)

Dialah pemberi paling setia
Tiap akar ilmu miliknya
Pelita dan lampu segala
Untuk manusia sebelum jadi dewasa.

Dialah ibu dialah bapa juga sahabat
Alur kesetiaan mengalirkan nasihat
Pemimpin yang ditauliahkan segala umat
Seribu tahun katanya menjadi hikmat.

Jika hari ini seorang Perdana Menteri berkuasa
Jika hari ini seorang Raja menaiki takhta
Jika hari ini seorang Presiden sebuah negara
Jika hari ini seorang ulama yang mulia
Jika hari ini seorang peguam menang bicara
Jika hari ini seorang penulis terkemuka
Jika hari ini siapa sahaja menjadi dewasa;
Sejarahnya dimulakan oleh seorang guru biasa
Dengan lembut sabarnya mengajar tulis-baca.

Di mana-mana dia berdiri di muka muridnya
Di sebuah sekolah mewah di Ibu Kota
Di bangunan tua sekolah Hulu Terengganu
Dia adalah guru mewakili seribu buku;
Semakin terpencil duduknya di ceruk desa
Semakin bererti tugasnya kepada negara.
Jadilah apa pun pada akhir kehidupanmu, guruku
Budi yang diapungkan di dulangi ilmu
Panggilan keramat "cikgu" kekal terpahat

Obama sokong biaya RM697 juta sistem pertahanan roket Israel

WASHINGTON 14 Mei - Pentadbiran Presiden Amerika Syarikat (AS), Barack Obama meminta Kongres meluluskan peruntukan AS$205 juta (RM697 juta) untuk membantu Israel mempercepatkan penempatan sistem pertahanan roket di kawasan sempadannya.
